It's all in the preparation!!

With heavy rainfall at the beginning of February an external decorating works has been somewhat delayed and the first visit has been all about the preparation which is a bit more flexible in relation to the weather.

We provided a comprehensive specification and quotation for the external painting of the front and rear elevation of a mid terraced house in Bristol. Whilst there are excellent quality paints now available which are hard wearing easy to apply and waterproof (we tend to use Dulux Weathershield and Sandtex) the works before the painting begins are the most important.

This job presented a variety of surfaces and previous finishes for us to contend with, a new section of render to one section, moss and algae build up on another and aged peeling paint to the rear elevation. All sufaces where brushed down to remove loose debris and to the new render 2 coats of a liquid stabilising primer where applied. The areas of moss and algae where washed down with a Biocide solution and allowed to dry then sponged over with clean water. Cracks where cleaned and filled then sanded flush.

In places the render beads had started to corrode and discolour the surface render, areas where sanded back and an anti corrosion coating was painted on and when dry a coat of Zinsser primer was applied. The rear elevation had painted stone mullions and window surrounds and these where in a poor state, scrapers and wire brushes where used to remove all loose and flaky paint and when bare stone was exposed a stabilising solution was applied.

A lot of time and effort but we now have a sound surface to apply our paint to.........
