Stormdry Masonry Protection

With the present weather conditions its no surprise that older homes are being effected by Penetrating Damp were rainwater enters the property through solid walls with no cavity. Now whilst the first port of call should be to check for defective rainwater goods (gutters and downpipes) and to maintain mortar there is still always the posibilty of ingress particularly around windows and doors. Stains appear and wall coverings peel and bubble and often plaster becomes degraded and crumbles to the touch. Walls become colder and this in turn can lead to issues of Condensation and its partner in crime MOULD.

There are a number of solutions and as with everything prevention can often be cheaper and less invasive than waiting until issues are so severe that extensive works are required. For unpainted walls wether render, stone or brick an external water repellant is both an effective treatment and a cost effective precautionary measure. The product can be applied by spray or brush/roller and when dry will not alter the appearance of the masonry. The benefits of applying an external treatment mean that invasive internal works are not always necessary and there is an additional benefit of a level of improved insulation as dry masonry will help reduce heat loss. To this end we have also used external water repellants on cavity walls where we have found that with the external wall saturated Condensation was appearing on the internal wall as this had become colder.

Over the last 20 years there have been a number of products entering the market place and we have tested and reviewed most with varying results. Over the past couple of years Stormdry Masonry Protection cream has become a favourite of ours and just recently The Energy Saving Trust has renewed its endorsement of Stormdry. In the report the EST states that:

"[Stormdry] can inhibit the absorption of water into many wall constructions, which can help improve the energy efficiency of dwellings by reducing heat loss, leading to lower heating requirements."
