Timber

This client requested a survey to look for any signs of Woodworm and Rot. Wessex Damp and Timber were instructed to treat the affected area and prevent any further occurrences.

Timber repair and preservation in Dorset

Our Free Of Charge Damp & Timber survey was requested on a conversion project. From the first and second floor of a large period property the client was developing 2 self contained flats. Floorboards where lifted and sections of ceiling and under roof boarding was removed to allow a thorough inspection. Armed with magnifying glass and torch rafters, joists and exposed studwork where examined for any signs of woodworm or rot.

There where two seperate loft areas and in both we found a combination of wet rot degradation and sporadic signs of common furniture beetle. The wet rot had arrived thanks to dislodged tiles and torn felt, the roofs where being relaid and new felt installed so all degraded timbers where cut back beyond the last point of decay and replacement pre-treated timbers inserted.

Through the remainder of the property we found prolific evidence of further wood boring beetle infestation, though not all appeared active we did find a ‘bright’ dust next to numerous flight holes which is the most common sign that infestation is active.

To one joist adjacent to an external wall Death Watch Beetle was identified (Larger flight hole and a ‘bun’ like shaped dust or frass to use its professional term). All adjoing timbers appeared clear of any activity so isolated treatment of the single joist, and timbers within a 1 metre perimeter would be treated specifically for this type of beetle.

Report and quotation provided to client and works agreed. Further floorboards where lifted and areas where timbers had been painted were cut back, timbers were then brushed down. A Boron-based gel was applied to the area of Death watch beetle and sections of wet rot degraded timbers removed. To all remaining timbers a spray treatment of a micro-emulsion formulated preservative was applied this will control and prevent wood boring insects & wood destroying fungi (Dry Rot & Wet Rots) from attacking the timbers.

Works complete and project can now proceed. If you have any timber or damp related issues then give us a call today or complete the survey request form, surveys are free of charge and there is no obligation.

Condensation in its simplest form is when moist air comes into contact with colder air or a colder surface and the water contained in the air is released to form condensation in the air or on the surface. It often results in black mould growth on walls and surfaces or you can see water droplets.

Aged and Period properties can often be cold and condensation will form on external walls, we can provide various types of solid insulation and often incorporate this with a level of damp proofing. Internal temperatures will improve and mould spotting reduces.
